SELMA MPB2

High-sensitivity vehicle-mounted laser methane detector for bumper installation with 0.03 ppm sensitivity and 0.04 s measurement time.

SELMA MPB2 In Brief

The SELMA MPB2 (Multi Pass Bumper) is a front-mounted vehicle-based laser methane detector designed for periodic inspection of underground gas pipelines. It continuously draws ambient air into the measurement cell and performs rapid methane analysis while the vehicle is in motion. With a sensitivity of 0.03 ppm and a measurement time of 0.04 s, the MPB2 can reliably detect trace methane concentrations at survey speeds of up to 50 km/h.
Developed in close cooperation with gas distribution companies, the detector is tailored to the practical demands of daily pipeline inspections. It has been validated in real-world conditions to ensure stable operation in dense urban environments, including areas with elevated hydrocarbon background levels. Its user-friendly design simplifies maintenance and routine operation, while enabling cost-effective, large-area inspections without disrupting traffic flow.
For greater inspection flexibility, the MPB2 can also be used together with the SELMA Dome or SELMA Mini remote laser methane detectors.

How SELMA MPB2 works

SELMA MPB2 utilizes TDLAS technology

The ambient air sample enters a multi-pass optical cell, where laser radiation tuned to the specific methane absorption line passes repeatedly between two opposing mirrors. As the laser beam travels through the sampled air, its intensity decreases proportionally to the methane concentration along the optical path, allowing the system to determine methane concentration in the sample in real time.

SELMA MPB2 Software

The software generates a complete inspection report to ensure full traceability of gas leak surveys. The system allows inspectors to monitor their real-time position along the pipeline inspection route during operation. Laser-based detection eliminates interference from other gases in urban environments, including vehicle exhaust emissions.

Why leak detection matters

Continuous methane monitoring, especially in urban areas, is essential not only for safety but also for environmental protection. Methane is one of the most potent greenhouse gases, trapping heat much more efficiently than carbon dioxide. Even small leaks, if undetected, can increase and have a serious impact on the climate. This is why regular monitoring is important: it helps to detect leaks as soon as they occur, prevent dangerous situations and control emissions in accordance with environmental regulations.
