Pergam Introduces SELMA Smart Plus for Professional Natural Gas Leak Detection

Portable field-ready methane and ethane detector combines active pump-driven air-sampling with TDLAS technology

Two Gas Measurements in One Portable Instrument

We are pleased to announce the development of the SELMA Smart Plus, a portable methane and ethane detector designed for professional gas leak inspections. The instrument helps inspection teams distinguish natural gas from other methane sources. With ppm-level sensitivity, SELMA Smart Plus detects low concentrations of methane and ethane, providing valuable data for field surveys and leak verification. Combined with fast response and selective gas measurement, the instrument is a reliable tool for daily field operations.
Conventional portable methane detectors often provide concentration data without identifying the likely origin of the gas. In complex environments, however, methane may originate from several different sources. SELMA Smart Plus addresses this challenge by measuring methane and ethane simultaneously and analyzing their relationship during field inspections.
SELMA Smart Plus is based on Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS). We selected this technology for its high selectivity to methane and ethane, which helps reduce interference from background gases commonly encountered during outdoor inspections. The optical measurement system is combined with an active pump-driven air-sampling design that continuously delivers ambient air samples to the measurement chamber. In addition to gas detection, SELMA Smart Plus includes integrated GNSS positioning and automatic data recording. Inspection records can be exported via the USB Type-C interface or by reading the SD card with a card reader. The instrument is factory-calibrated and does not require routine calibration during normal operation.
Field inspectors need reliable information quickly, especially when they are working in densely populated areas. SELMA Smart Plus was developed to provide that information directly at the inspection site while keeping operation straightforward for field personnel.
By providing additional information about the detected gas source during the initial field inspection, SELMA Smart Plus helps inspectors verify leaks with greater confidence while reducing unnecessary follow-up investigations.

Designed for Field Gas Inspections

We developed SELMA Smart Plus for routine gas utility inspections, emergency leak response, and industrial safety applications. Its strap-mounted design allows hands-free operation during field surveys, while interchangeable flexible and rigid probes help inspectors adapt the instrument to different inspection conditions. An advanced filtration system helps maintain stable sampling performance in demanding environments. For use in hazardous locations, SELMA Smart Plus is certified to ATEX/IECEx II 2G Ex ib IIB T4 Gb and is housed in an IP65-rated enclosure. The instrument is specified for operation from -20 to +50 °C, making it suitable for a wide range of outdoor conditions. A rechargeable AA battery system provides at least 7 hours of continuous operation, helping inspection teams complete extended field tasks without frequent recharging.
Methane, a major component of natural gas, is a significant contributor to climate change. Although present in smaller quantities than carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, methane has a much stronger warming effect over shorter time periods. A small underground leak that goes unnoticed can grow, pose a threat to public safety, and steadily increase emissions. Regular surveys catch these leaks early, when repair is cheap and the risk is low.
